thanks to the diy by behind the seams, a sweater, and some tulle, i've finally completed my alexander wang sweater! its very comfortable, minus the tulle that i had to use thanks to a lacking fabric department at the three arts and crafts stores i visted searching for a sheer fabric. oh well, the tulle worked out nicely for the most part. now my only concern is how to wash it...

I am an admitted award show junkie. Not as much for the awards (because yes, to a degree the awards are Hollywood's homage to...itself), but for the rare spectacular performance, which, when recognized, are worthy. For example, Sally Hawkins won, as of ten minutes ago, the award for her performance Happy-Go-Lucky and she was visibly grateful. I've been lucky enough to have been present at several award shows, and my parents have gone to even more than me, so I can say: I love the glamour, the buzz, the (sometimes) passion. inspired by urban audrey i went through the archive of lastnight'sparty's 35mm photographs and i can say that i love them more than i love the digital pictures. this only inspired my to get working on my inspiration board so i can print out copies of these pictures to put up there.

and as a side note, i might copy/try out the makeup from the last picture and to see how it looks with my ensemble for montreal. since it is (potentially) all black i might have to add some glitter for some fun.

As modren society moves forward, I have begun to find hope and faith in U.S. culture when just when I had almost given up hope (in all honestly who did not begin to doubt the sanity of the general public after Bush was reelected? but moving on). On the brink of a true economic meltdown, with Frannie and Freddy in a state of mind that could only be described as suicidal, American citizens elected Obama as the 43rd President, restoring so much hope for the future. His performance is yet to be seen, obviously, so I hesitate in stating that "all is better now", nor do I think that I would ever be able to say that, but I am glad to see that the US is taking a big leap towards freedom for everyone. However, after watching McCain's concession speech (and watching Sarah Palin cry), I can only assume that the conservative citizens of the United States are something a little more than "upset". "Infuriated" is probably the best assessment. Thus, as an imagined retaliation to the nation's rejection of McCain, Urban Outfitters, led by stauch conservative and manipulative chairman Richard Hayne, has decidedly taken over one of the most beautiful New York City landmarks: the Metro Theatre. This new location is sure to attract thousands upon thousands of would-be urban hipsters looking to soak up as much liberal paraphanelia they possibly can, without realizing that every dollar they spend at Urban Outfitters is another dollar that Richard Hayne could, and probably will at some point, donate towards conservative political leaders and parties. Ignoring the fact that UO is, for the most part, an overpriced and overhyped illusion of "going against the norm", the fact that Richard Hayne is taking money from young and liberal shoppers and donating it instead to political activists who see homosexuality as a demented for of incest, a la Rick Santorum, is disturbing and sad. Unfortunatly, as long as UO continues producing clothes that are available and favorable to the public Richard Hayne and the conservatives of the United Sates are making progress. This cannot lead to anything good.

phew. if i really put some time into this i think that it would be a little more factual and a little less, um, biased, but i really wanted to get something down on paper. this is something i've been wanting to blog about for a while, so for now it'll have to do. but it is true: UO has officially taken ownership over the Metro Theatre, which, coming from a native New Yorker, is a very sad thing. Not that urban is particularly ugly or anything, but i guess it would have been so much better had it stayed a movie theatre. oh well. i guess life moves on.

this picture is the covers of 2008 Vogue Nippon (not American Vogue because firstly, I couldn't find it, and secondly, it's ugly) condensed into one image. I happened to have this image saved on my computer because I think it can serve as a really interesting perspective as a stylistic analysis of magazine covers.

speaking of Vogue...

I can't remember where or who mentioned the article in the Times about Vogue, I know I read it somewhere else as well, but the article came up on fashion week daily so I read it in its entirety; as a (magazine) journalism major with an obvious affinity and care for fashion I found the article interesting. Written by Cathy Horyn the article is aptly titled "What's Wrong with Vogue?", the article focuses primarily on Anna Wintour, (obviously) the current editor of US Vogue, and is sprinkled with some pretty solid evidence in favor of Wintour but in disfavor of the magazine's evolution, particularly since the recession. Mentioning that Wintour might have been replaced by French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld (Devil Wears Prada as a foreshadow? or, since it happens to be based, supposedly, on Wintour herself, could this have already been a possibility? interesting.), Horyn does briefly touch on the rising trends of fashion blogging among other trends to which Wintour has steadfastly denied mention or recognition in the magazine. Not to beat a dead horse by repeating in entirety what Horyn explains in her article, I've copied my favorite quotes out of the article:

"The very qualities that set Vogue apart — consummate fashion judgment, a comfortableness with ideas in the shallow pool of celebrity and weight-loss articles — now seem to be narrowing its view, like an aperture shutting down."

"There are too many stories about socialites — or, at any rate, too few such stories that sufficiently demonstrate why we should care about these creatures."

"It’s embarrassing to see how Vogue deals with the recession. For the December issue, it sent a writer off to discover the “charms” of Wal-Mart and Target. A similar obtuseness permeates a fashion spread in the January issue, where a model and a child are portrayed on a weekend outing with a Superman figure. Is a ’50s suburban frock emblematic of the mortgage meltdown?"

The only question is does Wintour even care?
I guess we'll have to see.

i've never been a big fan of new years.
i can't pinpoint when but at some point new years became a date that I would and continue to associate with nostalgia, not for previous "new year"s but for the year past. I have yet to have a year i can claim to be the best. i hope that these years are my worst, and that i only have the better years to look forward to. so here I am, starting over once again, with resolutions that have never come true or grown old. so here's hoping for the new year. i'm ready.

there's something so peaceful about grocery shopping. maybe it's just me but I find that a lot can be understood by someone's manner of grocery shopping. Methodical people, like myself, slowly pace each aisle and display, while others dash between aisles in search of their predetermined shopping list.
